Libraries and Technology | Creatively Serving the Community

In today's world, libraries are doing more than just lending books. They're using technology to meet the changing needs of their communities.

A library in a rural setting may look very different than a metropolitan library, but both will utilize technology to serve their patrons' needs.

So, what kinds of technology do libraries share with their patrons? How do they use technology to bring solutions to their communities? And how do libraries take steps to create new technology resources and spaces?

WEBIT Services has provided IT support for the greater Chicago area for over 25 years. In recent years, WEBIT has begun partnering with its local libraries, providing IT expertise so libraries can do what they do best.

By reading this article, you will learn how libraries creatively use technology and how they develop plans for new technology spaces.

What Kinds of Technology Resources Can I Find at My Library?

At the heart of every library's mission lies a commitment to serving the public.

People turn to their local libraries for help with many questions and requests. These may range from "Can I use your computer to check my email?" to "Can you help me create a podcast?"

Of course, needs will vary by community and available resources.

Today, libraries may provide patrons with technology and technology spaces to accomplish various goals.

These may include:

Computers and Printing Spaces
Library computers can be used to surf the Internet, write papers, and print documents. While some may use them recreationally, others may use them for important tasks like sending in work applications.

Media Conversion Services
Do you have old VHS tapes you want to watch or convert to DVDs? Or maybe you have an old family photo album you'd like to digitize.

Some libraries carry the equipment and knowledge to help you convert media into an accessible format.

Digital Health Suites

Sometimes, visiting a doctor's office isn't feasible, but some patients don't have decent cameras or internet connection for a telehealth call.

In response, some libraries have created digital health suites. These areas have the equipment and privacy patrons need for a telehealth call.

Maker Spaces

It's been said that hands-on methods are the best way to learn. Some libraries have embraced this concept with technology in mind. They've created "Maker Spaces," areas and tools to promote creativity with technology.

Have you ever wanted to try 3D printing or record music? Maybe you're interested in making a podcast or video editing. Some libraries have the tools and space to allow the public to test and develop these skills.

Teen or Entertainment Spaces

Sometimes, libraries want to bring people together. In these instances, they've created entertainment spaces that appeal to all ages or a special group.

For example, some libraries have teen spaces and provide spaces for teens to play video games together.

How Do Libraries Create These Spaces?

Creating a technology resource requires understanding the library's community and its resources.

As they begin planning, libraries may ask the following questions:

  • What needs does our community have? Could technology meet those needs?
  • Who in our community is going to use this technology?
  • Do we have any existing or potential partners who can help us create this resource?
  • Do we have the space for it, and is it suitable for this technology? Do we need new wiring or additional WiFi access points?
  • What does our budget look like? How much could this project cost?
  • Who will take care of this resource and help people use it?

Managing Technology Spaces

Once libraries have a goal for their technology space, they have other logistics to consider. These questions may include:

  • Deciding when people can use the resource and for how long.
  • Rules about how to sign up and what you can do with the tech.
  • Tracking consumable supplies (like ink for printers).

How IT Partners Help Libraries Utilize Technology

Internal IT teams or IT providers can be essential in creating technology resources in a library. They aim to help libraries bring their goals and visions to life for the community.

When the planning begins, the IT partner may ask, “If you had no budgetary or spacial restraints, what would you want to create? What’s your ideal space and vision for this technology resource space?”

Once the library has shared its vision, the partner may ask, “Okay, now what budget are we working with? What about the time frame and space? How can we take steps with what we have now to begin creating that dream space?”

The IT partner aims to bring a technical edge and creativity to the library’s vision. They will use IT strategy and knowledge to help the library achieve its goal.

Steps to Creating a Library Technology Space

First, the library should bring the identified community needs to the IT partner. A goal may be, “We want to create a video filming and editing studio for local students.”

Then, the IT partner may explore the library setup with a staff member to see what spaces are available. Once they’ve identified a space, they will examine its capabilities to suit the goal.

For example, does the space have a decent WiFi connection or need an ethernet cable? If the latter, where can the cable go? Can they access the walls to insert the cable? Is the room big enough to fit the technology?

They can also help the library explore how to create this space on a budget. IT experts and providers should know the current prices, options, and technology capabilities needed to meet this goal.

For instance, going back to our video studio example, the IT expert would know what kind of connection you’d need to transfer video files, the types of computers that can edit videos quickly and reliably, and the price ranges of the different equipment needed.

Once all the pieces are in place, the IT partner will begin executing the project on an agreed timeline.

Once the project is complete, it will be open to the public.

Next Steps for Exploring Technology Within Your Library

By understanding their patrons and leveraging available resources, libraries create innovative spaces where people can learn, create, and connect. From computer spaces to digital health suites and maker spaces, libraries have embraced technology to meet their communities’ needs.

But creating these technology spaces isn't always easy. Libraries must consider factors like budget, space, and staffing. IT partners help libraries bring their technology goals to life, ensuring that these spaces are not only functional but also accessible and beneficial to the community.
